Mirjam Abbes - President
I am the president of the Small Steps 2 Success foundation. I live partly in the Netherlands and partly in the Gambia.
The idea of Small Steps 2 Success has always been a dream of mine. I myself have a son with a disability in the Netherlands. I know how difficult it is in Europe to survive with a disability. Conditions in Gambia are even worse. I would like to show Gambian society that people with disabilities can also be of value to society, that they can indeed learn something and that they can be independent of others.
I am proud of what we have achieved so far. But we are far from reaching our final goal. I hope to hand over the foundation in a few years so that it will be a Foundation run by Gambians for Gambians.
David (Dawda) Camara - Treasurer
My name is Dawda Camara, 42 years old. A Gambian from Giboroh Kuta. I am a teacher at the school for deaf and disabled children. I am now also a board member of Small Steps to Success as a treasurer, which I greatly appreciate and I thank everyone for the confidence they have in me in this position.
My life changed in 2011 when I was involved in a car accident and suffered a spinal cord injury, affecting my lower extremities. As a result, I could no longer walk and am now completely dependent on a wheelchair. I am now also a disabled person.
I was a soldier in the Gambia Armed Forces for ten years until 2011. From the moment I ended up in a wheelchair, my life changed dramatically and I experienced many challenges within a short period of time: discrimination, bullying, support and fewer opportunities. That’s difficult. But today I can happily say that my life was able to change again with the arrival of Small Steps 2 Success. I am very grateful to all of you and we believe that life will get a boost again.
Bakary Fatty - Secretary
My name is Bakary Fatty, 50 years old and living in Brikama town. I am the headmaster of the deafschool in Jiboro. After my education I opened a nursery school and later I applied for a course at the Gambian College for Early Childhood Development Programm. I also did my PDC and I went for a sign language course at the St. Johns. In 2023 I became a boardmember of Small Steps 2 Success as a secretary. My aim is to help through this foundation the people with a disability in the Gambia
Safiatou Drammeh - Social Secretary
My name is Safiatou Drammeh, born in Tujereng where I still live. I am the social secretary. I am happy to be a boardmember and to share our ideas in Small Steps to Success.
Ebrima Sarjo - Vice Chairperson
I am Ebrima Sardjo , born in Sukuta and living in Tujereng. I am also a boardmember now, the vice-chairperson of Small Steps 2 Success. I see that it is necessary to do something for people who are disabled in my community and in my country, so that is why I want to be a part of this board. Together we stand, together we win! May God help us to achieve our goals and dreams!
Kissima Bitteh - Legal advisor
My name is Kissima Bittaye. I live in Tujereng within Kombo South District in the West Coast Region of The Gambia. I am a lawyer by profession and I am currently working at the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice as a Senior State Counsel. I am now a member of the Executive Committee (Board of Trustees) of the Small Step 2 Success Foundation as an Adviser. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the vulnerable groups who are differently able in our society to be given a special treatment as they desire. So, I am calling everyone to join us in this important mission.
